Hospiz: Grimsel underground

VISIT THE Grimsel 2 HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION AND THE CRYSTAL Grotto starting at Grimsel Hospiz.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Tours are carried out in German. English may be available on request.

This tour takes you from Grimsel Hospiz deep under Lake Grimsel to the breathtaking crystal grotto at Gerstenegg.

On the Hospizbahn, we will pass over the construction site of the growing Spitallamm dam before going underground. Just a few metres later, and we arrive at the Grimsel 1 power plant. From here, we take the tunnel bus to the unique Grimsel 2 pumped-storage plant, located deep in the granite 500 metres below Lake Oberaar and 100 metres below Lake Grimsel.
Back through the tunnels we reach the treasure chamber of the Grimselwelt – the crystal grotto in Gerstenegg. This crystal grotto was discovered in 1974 while the tunnels were being built and shortly afterwards placed under protection.
Finally, the Hospizbahn takes you out of the tunnels and up to the viewing platform on Grimsel Hospiz.
