The Gelmerbahn funicular railway takes you rattling and backwards for 12 minutes up to the turquoise mountain lake.
With a gradient of 106 percent, it is undisputedly the steepest open Funicular Railway in Europe.

Adults return CHF 40.- / single CHF 20.-

Tickets

Online booking in advance is strongly recommended, as there may be longer waiting times when purchasing tickets at the valley station.

Please collect your time tickets for uphill and downhill journeys with the purchased ticket voucher from the ticket office at least 15 minutes before departure so that your booked seats are guaranteed.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the Grimseltor Tourist Center in Innertkirchen and at the Gelmerbahn funicular railway valley station. These are valid per journey for the calendar day and time of day specified at the time of purchase. Subsequent changes, exchanges or refunds of the purchase price are not possible.

There is no sales point at the Gelmerbahn funicular railway mountain station. Please buy tickets for any descent online in advance, as the cable car is quickly fully booked, especially in good weather.

Construction site at the valley station

Access to the Gelmerbahn funicular railway this summer is via steep steps and temporary hiking trails due to a construction site. Expect a walk of approx. 20 minutes from the parking lot / post bus.

Equipment

The Gelmerbahn funicular railway takes you up to the Gelmersee at around 1850 m above sea level. Temperatures and weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains.

We recommend sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing. The mountain paths require surefootedness and a head for heights.

Prerequisites

The Gelmerbahn funicular railway is only accessible via stairs and is therefore not wheelchair accessible, not suitable for baby carriages and also not suitable for people with walking difficulties. There are no facilities for storing luggage.

Catering

There are no catering facilities at the Gelmerbahn funicular railway mountain station. Take enough provisions with you.

The ascent to the Cabin Gelmerhütte takes 1 h 45 from the mountain station. The menu in the SAC hut offers regional delicacies. You can plan a visit to the hut as a day trip or stay overnight in the hut.

You can enjoy a meal before or after your visit at the Hotel Grimsel Hospiz and the Hotel and Nature Resort Handeck .

Early online booking is strongly recommended to guarantee a ticket.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on the Gelmerbahn funicular railway. Pup dogs travel free of charge. From a shoulder height of 30 cm, dogs must pay the children’s price.
